The Pretty Reckless

Released on Razor & Tie records—two years after their stimulating EP, Hit Me Like A Man—The Pretty Reckless are back. Exhaling spunk, riot and convention, the band’s latest album, Going To Hell, is the ultimate shed of lead vocalist Taylor Momsen’s on-screen Gossip Girl image.

With its dirty backtracks, sexy vocals and abandoning lyrics, The Pretty Reckless are certainty going to hell—or, at least they’re on their way there. From impeccable blues-inspired guitar riffs by lead guitarist Ben Phillips to low-growling vocals by Momsen, the 12-track album stays consistent with elements of hard rock, themes of anarchy and all-around grit that the band is known for.

Full of sexual innuendos and raw lyrics like, “Follow me down to the river/ Drink while the water is clean/ Follow me down to the river tonight/ I’ll be down here on my knees,” opening track, “Follow Me Down” lays it on thick and really sets the tone for the rest of this guilty pleasure.

Tracks like “Going To Hell,” “Sweet Things” and “Why’d You Bring a Shotgun to the Party” are nothing but fun, anthem head-bangers and dare we say—pit openers. Slow and haunting numbers like “Dear Sister” and “House on a Hill” are also grungy and raw, almost a reminisce of Evanescence meeting Flyleaf for the first time.

With a perfect closing track called “Waiting For a Friend”—amazingly stripped down to a strum of an acoustic guitar and harmonica—dark lyrics like, “You left me today/Lyin’ on the floor/I wanted you to stay/Seems you wanted more,” shows a more sensitive side of Momsen and her vocals. Going To Hell certainly has its fair share of highs and lows, but overall it’s nothing but a daring, guilty pleasure and a great refresher on that classic hard rock that we love so much.
